Many ways pre-tax benefits support you

Workplace benefits and family planning are in the news lately. Businesses are looking for ways to support employees—whether it's answering questions about coverage or creating customized plan options.

There are two employee benefits most Americans already have: Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). HSAs and FSAs already support a wide range of reproductive healthcare and family planning expenses. When you use an HSA or FSA to pay for qualified medical expenses, you are using tax-free dollars, which could save you up to 30% on those costs.

Here are ten ways these pre-tax benefits can help support family planning and reproductive health.

1. OB-GYN care

Routine visits to an OB-GYN—including well-woman exams, pap smears, and other preventive screenings—are eligible expenses under both HSAs and FSAs.

2. Menstrual care products

Menstrual care products—including pads, tampons, liners, cups, and similar products—are eligible expenses.

3. Prescription birth control

Prescription contraceptives—including birth control pills, patches, rings, injections, and implants—are eligible expenses when prescribed by a physician.

4. Legal abortion

The cost of a legal abortion is an eligible medical expense under federal tax law for both HSAs and FSAs.

5. Transportation and lodging for healthcare

Transportation costs to and from medical care—including mileage at the standard mileage rate, parking, and tolls—are eligible. Lodging expenses necessary for medical care may also qualify.

6. Vasectomy (and reversal)

The cost of a vasectomy and vasectomy reversal are both eligible medical expenses.

7. Gear for nursing

Breast pumps, nursing pads, lactation supplies, and storage bags for breast milk are all eligible expenses.

8. Doula services and midwife treatment

Midwife services are eligible expenses. Doula services may be eligible with a Letter of Medical Necessity.

9. In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment

IVF and other fertility treatments are eligible medical expenses. This can include related lab work, medications, and procedures.

10. Fertility monitors and pregnancy tests

Pregnancy tests, ovulation monitors, and fertility tracking kits are eligible expenses.
